We had the same problem and located a big clog at the base of the flexible hose, where it goes into the U-bend attachment. See the DC14 Owners Manual, page 11, Item C for a picture. If youve already thrown out your manual, its available on the Dyson website. Theres a white tab button which allows the U-bend to slide out for cleaning. There are other places where clogs can occur (again, see the manual), but this is one of the more likely trouble spots.
The motor projection usually comes on when the motor overheats. A clog maybe causing this. There a number of pieces to take of and check for a clog. You also have warranty on this, if you can't figure it out, take in to a warranty repair shop for repair.

I'm trying to figure out which dyson vacuum is better, the DC14 or DC17. from what i read, the DC17 is the newer model of the DC14, the DC17 added an extra motor for the brush, but from the dyson site, the DC17 has less suction power. it went from 250AW (dc14) to 220AW (dc17). is that a significant difference that i should be worried about?

Hi,DC17 is much better than DC14. I always believe User's review are much better than what Features Company usually Displays.Read :-http://www.epinions.com/review/Dyson_DC17_Animal_Vacuum/content_404790546052 ... Vacuums

My older Dyson DC14 (the purple one) early model with a clutch on the beater bar belt needs a clutch replacement. The bar has been cleaned and there are no worn or damaged parts so I conclude that the clutch at the motor end of the belt needs to be replaced. I can find the part online but no instructions on how to disassemble the vacuum to get to and replace it. Dysons only advice is to give me the address and phone of the nearest service center. Can you help me?

There is a rubber valve on the top of Dyson DC14 all floors. When the vacum is locked in its upright position or the hand wand is used there is a whistling sound coming out of the valve. When the vac is used as a floor vac, it does not make the sound. Is this something that I can fix? Is there an obstruction somewhere that would be causing this sound? thank you.
