My Beam central vac has started turning off after about 10 minutes of use. I thought it was the hose, but the hose in the garage does the same thing, and I've also tried the other outlets, and the same. The canister was just emptied about two weeks ago. I have also reset the breaker, and unplugged and replugged in the system. Could this be a bad motor?
First your moms vac. If it has worn brushes only, these are generally easy to replace.
However if the wear surface is worn like an apple core, concave, the new brushes will not seat or fix the problem, so remove the motor and inspect before wasting money on brushes. On low RPM heavy duty motors the brushes generally are easier to replace, but a GOOD repair tech will run them in at half power allowing them to seat. One trick is to gently file the upper and lower edge of a new brush, very slightly at about 45 degrees.

Your vac. You have two low voltage INLETS which have either dirty or worn contacts inside. These are spring loaded brass contacts. They can become dirty, stuck or the tension springs can be lost if removed for painting or renos.
Replace and test one at a time, should cost no more than $20 fro 2. Wiring is low voltage. Be sure not to fully remove the conatct screw on the new valve when attaching the wire. Wrap the wire neatly clockwise around the screw and trim any excess.
Reinstall with the inlet door closing DOWN,where possible. You will have two screws, a long and a short. The short screw goes to the side of the valve where the pipe lays. IE in in the basement the pipe generally travels up, so the sort screw sits on that side so as not to pierce he pie.

On my M&S Air Vac AV425 central vaccuum system, the system usually turns on by inserting the vaccuum hose into one of the vaccuum outlets. However, it now runs continuously. Between the two brands... stay away from the nutone. If you can get it, the Beam, Eureka, or even the Electrolux and Kenmore(sears) would still be better. The warranty would be better on the Beam and Eureka (7 or 10 and one model is even 15 years) ... Easy Flo EF1525 Central System Vacuum

Recently my central vac system started making a louder than usual and laboured sound when in uise, enough so that I took note and inspected the canister and motor while running. The motor was trowing off blue sparks and looked like it could 'POP' at any moment. I will not risk using it until I know what the problem is and how to repair it. My assumption is the motor needs to be replaced. The system came with the resale house I bought 3 yrs ago but I do not know the age of the system itself.
