Bottom wheel won't turn and belt is on - Dyson DC07 Bagless Upright Cyclonic Vacuum

Answers :

Hello,

When a Dyson DC07 roller brush does not spin, it can only be caused by one of two problems.

The Dyson DC07 uprights use a\015\012 clutch mechanism to control the brush spinning when you change the \015\012floor / carpet switch. When the brush doesn't spin, it's caused either by the clutch or roller brush gone bad. \015\012 Most other uprights use a belt to spin the roller brush, and if \015\012something is stuck in the roller brush it will cause the belt to break. \015\012 Dyson vacuums however will make that awful grinding noise rather then \015\012breaking the belt.

I'll be happy to \015\012walk you through step by step on how to diagnosis this problem and find \015\012out which one of these two parts is bad on your vacuum.

Step 1. \015\012Make sure the vacuum is unplugged. Then turn the vacuum upside down so \015\012that the brushes are facing up. It's easiest if you put the head of the \015\012vacuum \015\012on top of a bench, or counter top. This is how the vacuum should look:

Step\015\012 2. You see on the bottom of the vacuum 3 plastic screws that are \015\012usually \015\012the same color as the vacuum cleaner. If you're vacuum is purple, the \015\012screws \015\012will also be purple. Use a flat head screwdriver, and turn each of the 3\015\012 screws \015\012a half of a turn, counter clockwise to loosen then. After each screw has\015\012 been \015\012turned (you don't need to remove the completely, just a half of a turn \015\012is all), \015\012simply pull upwards on the bottom plate to remove it.

Step\015\012 3. You should now be able to see the roller brush exposed. You'll now \015\012need \015\012to remove the roller brush. This will take some patience, and some work \015\012in order \015\012to get this brush out of the vacuum. There is a special tool that has \015\012been \015\012designed to help you get the brush out easier. I would try getting the \015\012brush out \015\012first before buying this special tool. The easiest way is to use a flat \015\012head \015\012screw driver and pry the belt up while pulling up and out on the brush. \015\012With \015\012some patience and some maneuvering, you'll be able to get the brush out \015\012of the \015\012vacuum. Here's where you should put the flat head screw driver on the \015\012brush:

Step 4. Once you get the brush out of the vacuum \015\012cleaner, it's time to test it. \015\012Use your finger tips to hold just the end caps on the very end of the \015\012roller \015\012brush. While holding just the end caps, use your thumbs to try and spin \015\012the \015\012roller brush. Does the brush spin freely? It should rotate completely \015\012several \015\012times on each spin. If the brush doesn't spin, or you feel some kind of \015\012resistance to the brush spinning, then this indicates that your roller \015\012brush has \015\012gone bad. Here's a picture \015\012of how to test the brush:

If\015\012 the roller brush went bad, then you'll need to purchase a new one. \015\012Here's a direct link to the roller brush your machine uses on our \015\012website GoVacuum.com:

\015\012

If \015\012the brush however was able to spin \015\012freely, and it spun multiple times on each spin, this indicates a little more \015\012serious problem of the clutch itself has gone bad. The clutch \015\012replacement repair \015\012is a much longer, more challenging repair to do. There is a very helpful\015\012 video on \015\012how to replace the clutch below so that you may follow step by step \015\012instructions \015\012on how to change it. It was really helpful for me the first time I did \015\012this \015\012repair.

If you need to replace the clutch, here's a direct link \015\012to the clutch your Dyson DC07 uses on our website:
http://www.govacuum.com/dydcclasfore.html

Here's\015\012 the video on how to replace the clutch:

When the brush stops spinning it can only\015\012 be one of these two problems. This clutch mechanism was so \015\012problematic that Dyson removed it on the second series of the DC07 \015\012models. I hope that this repair was helpful in diagnosing your \015\012problem. If you have any questions about the diagnosing, or the \015\012clutch change, please feel free to use the Clarification Request form \015\012here on the Fixya repair page.
