Yes you can replace the hose youself. First buy the hose (through Dyson directly or google to see a list of online retailers). All you'd need to do is to unhook the hose from the bottom - you'll remove the canister/dirt bin and push the lower cord hook/cup off the back of the machine from the front and simply click the new hose into place.

Hi: My DC14 (not animal version) has 3 major cracks that have pretty much killed the thing. There are three 'columns' that run down from the handle to the base. From the back, the left one has either the intake or outflow for the canister and the right one has the reverse. The middle one is where the base of the extension hose and cord is mounted.
