My Dyson DC 14 is making the horrible "ratcheting"sound only when the brush is engaged on the carpet setting. I have cleaned the brush, so there are no obstructions, the canister is empty and properly on the unit. I checked to make sure all of the "traps" and hoses are clear of obstructions, the belt is on the brush securely and moves freely, the brush itself spins freely, but there is still the "ratcheting" noise. Any other suggestions?
Our DC33 was making the same ratcheting sound immediately upon placing the cleaner/brush head on the carpet. We carefully pulled the beater/brush bar out of the vacuum. I have the Eureka 4870 "The Boss" Smart Vac. The beater bar began to turn constantly and can't be shut by moving the Brush Roll Contol to Bare Floor position or the machine to the upright postion. It has also eaten two new belts. A local tech says he has seen this problem whereby the free-wheel assembly that makes contact with the belt to engage the beater bar is misalgned and cannot disengage. It is usually the chassis which would mean replacement of enough parts that would not be worthwhile

The "horrible noise" you were hearing before wasn't the clutch! It was the roller brush. If the brush is not turning, all you are doing is burning out your new clutch. When I vacuum w/ the brush control in the on position it make a really loud noise, almost like a grinding sound. I have looked at it and nothing seems to be wrong, but I notice that the pin that engages the belt seems to vibrate a bit, possibly creating the noise. It started when I accidentally got part of a plastic grocery bag caught in the brush. Could it have stretched a belt? Nothing is caught any other place and it only makes the noise when the brush in in the on position.
Yes, the belt could have been stretched and is now vibrating and hitting other parts and creating a noise if much of the bag got caught under the belt. I was vacuuming my room and all of a sudden I hear this loud noise, then notice the roller brush isn't spinning. Thinking too much hair was caught I separated it from the rod and hose to clean it out, but noticed that the roller brush didn't move at all while I was cleaning it. I've cleaned the brush before and it would roll around with little effort, but this time I couldn't move it at all. After removing hair and string I put the vacuum back together and started it up, but the noise continued,

Could very well be the belt.\015\012When cleaning the brush it is a good idea to add some WD40 at the ends where the plastic pieces are that hold the brush in the vacuum. Kirby Sentria Hi, I have a new Sentria & used it for the first time today. It was going fine & then I could smell smoke & it started to make a loud noise so I turned it off quickly. If I turn it on it immediately starts making the noise again & I can see it is all lit up inside like something is burning or sparking. I have checked the roller & it is moving & I have checked the fan which is moving & doesn't appear to be damaged in anyway. This product is from the US & we are in the UK & we are us

The vacuum is making a noise like something is stuck when it is in the carpet position but not when in the floor position. I can't find anything that is stuck in the areas that I can see. I have cleaned the brush but it does not seem to want to turn. Does this machine need to be oiled so the roller will turn? Is there a way to check inside the motor? Do you think that because the brush won't turn that is making the noise? Do you know of any repair shops in the Lake Havasu City, Arizona area?
