The brush will not turn. It makes a grinding

\015 The brush will not turn. It makes a grinding noise when in the carpet mode.\015

Answers :

It might be that the drive belt is stretched, broken or worn. It can cause the brush to not turn and it will make funny noises. I would try changing the belt. You can get a replacement here:

Dyson DC17 Belt
The Belt is damaged or something is caught in the drive. It is a bit of a pain on this vac (compared to older non-dyson), but just pull the bottom panel off by unscrewing the two Phillips screws on the bottom (this is all by memory). The Belt under the panel should be toothed, if not, call up Dyson and they will send you a new one free of charge (as long as it was not at fault of the operator). The beater bar is a real tight fit and you have to push a little on the belt a little at a time to get the old one off and the new one on. Be pateint.

When I vacuum w/ the brush control in the on position it make a really loud noise, almost like a grinding sound. I have looked at it and nothing seems to be wrong, but I notice that the pin that engages the belt seems to vibrate a bit, possibly creating the noise. It started when I accidentally got part of a plastic grocery bag caught in the brush. Could it have stretched a belt? Nothing is caught any other place and it only makes the noise when the brush in in the on position.

Yes, the belt could have been stretched and is now vibrating and hitting other parts and creating a noise if much of the bag got caught under the belt. That dust is from the carbon brushes on the motor. You may need to check them, and also clean out the motor compartment. A slight noise could be a motor bearing starting to go. Does the smell like rubber or electrical. If rubber, then the belt h ... Vacuums

Take the bottom plate off and check the belt. Also, rotate the brush by hand - it should turn with only a moderate resistance from the belt, or very little if you take the belt off. If it is hard to turn, or if the belt is stripped-out right where it ... Vacuums

My Dyson DC 14 is making the horrible "ratcheting"sound only when the brush is engaged on the carpet setting. I have cleaned the brush, so there are no obstructions, the canister is empty and properly on the unit. I checked to make sure all of the "traps" and hoses are clear of obstructions, the belt is on the brush securely and moves freely, the brush itself spins freely, but there is still the "ratcheting" noise. The vacuum is making a noise like something is stuck when it is in the carpet position but not when in the floor position. I can't find anything that is stuck in the areas that I can see. I have cleaned the brush but it does not seem to want to turn. Does this machine need to be oiled so the roller will turn? Is there a way to check inside the motor?
