I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulties with your DC17. This machine should have no problem dealing with animal hair, so if it doesn't seem to be picking up as well as usual, this may be due to a blockage. The easiest way to check for this is to follow the steps shown in our online support guide:

Although I note you've already cleaned the filter, you may want to take a look at the video below to make sure you've washed it as recommended - in normal use, this should be done at least once every 3-6 months. Use cold water without detergent, and allow at least 24 hours for it to dry completely before replacing it.

Folks, My wife and I own a three-year-old Hoover U6434-900 self-propelled "Wind Tunnel" upright vacuum cleaner. The problem is that, even on the highest setting (front-end as high as possible), it gets bogged-down in even shallow pile carpet to the point that the brush stops. I've cleaned the machine thoroughly, pulling hair, thread, dental floss and such from the brush (and everywhere else), including unscrewing the brush end caps and pulling out the cat hair mats which formed in there.

I have a Royal 7910 extractor and even though I vacuum before cleaning the carpet, by black cocker spaniel's hair gets pulled into the plastic pick-up attachment and I cannot find an easy way to clean it out. I have the Dyson animal upright vacuum. It's 2 years old and now it just isn't working as well as it once did. Suction seems to be lacking - it's not picking up pet hair or much else from the carpet. I have to go over the spot for a few minutes and still, the hair isn't picked up.

My pet hair eraser smells like it is burning all the time and sounds funny. Vorwerk ET 340 - been great but now noticing strong burning smell after vacuuming some hair from the bathroom. Bag is nearly empty.
