I was vacuuming my room and all of a sudden I hear this loud noise, then notice the roller brush isn't spinning. Thinking too much hair was caught I separated it from the rod and hose to clean it out, but noticed that the roller brush didn't move at all while I was cleaning it. I've cleaned the brush before and it would roll around with little effort, but this time I couldn't move it at all. After removing hair and string I put the vacuum back together and started it up, but the noise continued,

My Dyson DC 14 is making the horrible "ratcheting"sound only when the brush is engaged on the carpet setting. I have cleaned the brush, so there are no obstructions, the canister is empty and properly on the unit. I checked to make sure all of the "traps" and hoses are clear of obstructions, the belt is on the brush securely and moves freely, the brush itself spins freely, but there is still the "ratcheting" noise. Any other suggestions?
Our DC33 was making the same ratcheting sound immediately upon placing the cleaner/brush head on the carpet. We carefully pulled the beater/brush bar out of the vacuum. My Kirby Heritage II vacuum is not picking up dirt up out of the carpet like usual, and I have to keep setting it lower to pick anything up. I finally get it to such a low setting that it starts sucking the carpet up and makes a whirring noise, and starts smelling. Every time this happens, we find the belt has been burned. We are wondering if the brush roll inside with the brushes that pick up dirt are worn out and too short?

I replaced the clutch in the dyson dc14. it isnt making that terrible noise anymore....thank god!! but the roller brush is not moving when the vacuum is in use. whats wrong?
The "horrible noise" you were hearing before wasn't the clutch! It was the roller brush. If the brush is not turning, all you are doing is burning out your new clutch. When I vacuum w/ the brush control in the on position it make a really loud noise, almost like a grinding sound. I have looked at it and nothing seems to be wrong, but I notice that the pin that engages the belt seems to vibrate a bit, possibly creating the noise. It started when I accidentally got part of a plastic grocery bag caught in the brush. Could it have stretched a belt? Nothing is caught any other place and it only makes the noise when the brush in in the on position.
Yes, the belt could have been stretched and is now vibrating and hitting other parts and creating a noise if much of the bag got caught under the belt. If you have another belt for this vacuum, please put it on and see if the noise stops. If it does ... Hoover U5780-900 Windtunnel Cyclonic Bagless UprightVacuum
My FEIN 9-55-'13 recently started making more noise and is now officially a "screamer". There also developed quite a vibration associated with the noise which made me think it was probably bearings. So I took it apart and found no detectable play or lateral movement in the bearings, they seem fine to me. So I thought perhaps the brushes. The rotor where the brushes ride is quite black but I can't figure out how to get to those brushes, although I don't really think they are causing the noise
This problem is only caused by one thing the motor bearings are noisy, I have never found any other reason, they may look good and fell good but trust me replace the motor and the noise ... Fein 9-55-13 Turbo II Bagged Canister Vacuum
My bissell model 18Z6 has developed a loud noise and vibration when the brush is running. I have removed the brush assy and cleaned all the hair, etc but still the noise. I ran the brush motor with the belt disconnected and all seemed ok, but of course there was no load on the motor. I suspect a problem with the brush assy bearings or axle or both but I hate to just throw parts at the problem. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

My Dyson Animal has good suction and works fine for actually picking up dirt, but when I use the vacuum with the roller, I hear a grinding/rumbling noise. Its only when I use the vacuum with the brush rotating. It does not happen hen I shut the roller brush off. The belt is fine. I cannot figure out what is wrong as there are no clogs, debris, or foreign objects stuck in the brush or in the belt. The noise seems to be the only issue. The vacuum picks up fine. It just doesn't sound right a
