I bought this same vacuum and have all the same problems. It seems it is always the filter but if it out and use the air hose and clean it it really really well then it sucks really well it will pick up anything but who wants to always do this. As one person asked about the bare floors not working well I read on another blog that company knows it does not work well on barefloors but has failed to metion this. One more thing besides the clog always being in the back were the hose connects I always find a clog in the yellow part above the canister. I always pull out so much crap there. Oh sorry one more thing I found that helped with the power was that I completely took the duster part completely off and just use the hose. Hope you have better luck than I do or did..
I wish I had seen this site sooner. My same vacuum has not been working well since this past summer (it's now Christmas!). I was getting ready to research vacuums to purchase with my Christmas money and came across this site. I was able to open up the vacuum and reach inside and I removed so much gunk that it filled up almost half a garbage bag. I then plugged it in and it worked a bit better. I turned it off and found more gunk had become lodged in the same spots I had pulled it from before. I removed that and turned it back on and voila! The obnoxiously loud motor sound was gone and I could see stuff being sucked into the bagless area for the first time in months. It works like brand new. I had another vacuum by the same brand for 10 years, and it always was clogged but worked fine after unclogging it. The Altima just clogged in different places so I thought it was broken. It works GREAT now!! Thanks for the advice, all!!!!!!!

I have replaced the bag, pulled out lots of animal hair and such from the area behind the bag, and taken off all parts able to be removed without a screwdriver and pulled out all chunks of hair, dirt, etc. It still keeps shooting everything it should **** up out the back. Unbeknownst to me, someone took the bag out of my Kenmore Progressive vacuum and failed to replace it. I have been vacuuming without a bag for months, and today the vacuum stopped sucking. When I opened up the front to replace the bag, tons of dirt and dust came pouring out. I thoroughly cleaned the vacuum, put in a new bag, but still no sucking power. Just dust coming from the rear vents where one of the filters is. Is the vacuum ruined, or is it a simple solution of buying a new filter?

Sounds like you need to buy a new motor. All that grit and dust will ruin a motor and I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did.\015\012This is where a vacuum that won't run without a bag would have been nice. (Aerus for one) ... Kenmore 31913 Progressive Direct Drive Bagged Upright Vacuum

My Vacuum DC-17 has just quit sucking. It has been making quite a racket since I had the belt changed at a repair shop several months ago. I was told that the belt was a new design and figured that was why it was making so much noise. it seemed to work fine, was picking up dirt and all, but today, when I started vacumming, I noticed it was not sucking air either with the belt engaged or not. My vacuum is approx. 5 years old.

My Kirby Heritage II vacuum is not picking up dirt up out of the carpet like usual, and I have to keep setting it lower to pick anything up. I finally get it to such a low setting that it starts sucking the carpet up and makes a whirring noise, and starts smelling. Every time this happens, we find the belt has been burned. We are wondering if the brush roll inside with the brushes that pick up dirt are worn out and too short?
