I have a replacement switch. How do I get the cover off to get at & replace the defective metal switch? Thanx Pete Potter

Hi, you need not to do this yourself, just take it to a electronic repairer around you to take if off and replace the defective metal rather than stress yourself...

Take care
Hello,Installing\015\012a light dimmer switch is a relatively straight forward project to do, however\015\012when dealing with electricity safety needs to be the top priority.\015\012\015\012 \015\012\015\012You can\015\012replace a standard light switch with a light dimmer switch in less than an hour\015\012using just a common screwdriver and a pair of Needle Nose Pliers. \015\012\015\012 \015\012\015\012Installing a Light Dimmer Switch Instructions\015\012\015\012\015\012\015\012To begin\015\012with, turn power off to the light switch at the main circuit panel or fuse box.\015\012 Note, it is best to use only one hand when turning on and off the circuit\015\012breaker. \015\012\015\012Your\015\012other hand should not be touching the circuit panel or anything that could come\015\012in contact with the ground.\015\012\015\012\015\012\015\012Make sure\015\012you let everyone in the home know that you are working on the light switch and\015\012that for no reason should they turn power back on at the main circuit panel or\015\012fuse box. You may also consider putting a piece of tape over the circuit\015\012breaker and label it ?DO NOT TURN ON?.\015\012\015\012\015\012\015\012Remove old Light Switch\015\012\015\012 \015\012\015\012After\015\012turning power off at the circuit panel or fuse box, toggle the light switch a\015\012couple of times to ensure that the light switch is no longer operational.\015\012\015\012 \015\012\015\012Next,\015\012using your screwdriver, remove the screws that hold the light switch faceplate\015\012and pull the face plate off.\015\012\015\012 \015\012\015\012With the faceplate off, and using\015\012a volt meter or neon tester, touch one probe to one of the switch terminals and\015\012the other to the ground terminal and see if you get a deflection on the volt\015\012meter or the neon tester glows. Repeat the test on the other switch terminals.\015\012If the volt meter does not deflect or the neon tester does not glow in any of\015\012the tests then proceed forward. If you do see a deflection in the volt meter or\015\012the neon tester does glow then power is not off at the switch. Go back to the\015\012electrical panel and check to see what other circuit breakers could be feeding\015\012the light switch. NOTE: Make sure you have\015\012the volt meter set for reading 120VAC in order to use it properly. \015\012\015\012Now\015\012remove the two screws that hold the light switch to the electrical box.\015\012\015\012 \015\012\015\012Next,\015\012pull the switch out from the electrical box a few inches.\015\012\015\012 \015\012\015\012Using\015\012your screwdriver and/or needle nose pliers remove the wires from the light\015\012switch and straighten them with your needle nose pliers\015\012\015\012Install Light Dimmer Switch\015\012\015\012 \015\012\015\012If you\015\012are installing a light dimmer switch that has only two black wires and a\015\012ground, simply install the light dimmer switch by connecting the two black\015\012wires on the light dimmer switch to the wires in the electrical box and\015\012according to the manufacturer?s directions. Note that a 2 black wire dimmer\015\012switch does not have a polarity so it does not matter which black dimmer wire\015\012attaches to which light switch wire. \015\012\015\012 \015\012\015\012Connect\015\012the wires by twisting each pair together and then installing a wire nut over\015\012them. You may also want to wrap the wire nut with a small piece of electricians\015\012tape for added protection.\015\012\015\012 \015\012\015\012Also, if\015\012the light dimmer switch has a green wire, connect this wire to the ground wire\015\012in the electrical box. \015\012\015\012 \015\012\015\012If you\015\012are installing a light dimmer switch that has black and red wires and a ground,\015\012connect the black wire to the power (Line) and the red wire to the (Load). To\015\012determine which is which, pull out both switch wires from the box and separate\015\012them. Also pull out the bare wires (grounds) if the light dimmer switch is\015\012installed in a plastic electrical box. \015\012\015\012\015\012\015\012Safety Notice on Installing Light Dimmer Switch\015\012\015\012 \015\012\015\012Being\015\012extremely careful and ensuring the wires are separated from each other, have\015\012someone turn on the circuit breaker. Using a volt meter or neon tester, probe\015\012one switch wire and the bare wire (ground), and see if you get a deflection on\015\012the volt meter or if the neon tester glows. If you do, then this is the Line\015\012and the other wire is the Load. Be careful not to touch the bare wires with\015\012your body. \015\012\015\012 \015\012\015\012If the\015\012electrical box is metal, probe one switch wire and the metal box, and see if\015\012you get a deflection on the volt meter or if the neon tester glows. Again, if\015\012you do, then this is the Line wire and the other wire is the Load.\015\012\015\012 \015\012\015\012Now have\015\012someone turn off the circuit breaker before proceeding further and connecting\015\012the dimmer switch wires to the Line and Load wires.\015\012\015\012 \015\012\015\012Connect\015\012the light dimmer switch wires by twisting each pair together and then installing\015\012a wire nut over them. You may also want to wrap the wire nut with a small piece\015\012of electricians tape for added protection.\015\012\015\012\015\012\015\012Push the\015\012newly wired light dimmer switch into the electrical box and attach it with the\015\012two mounting screws.\015\012\015\012 \015\012\015\012Reinstall\015\012the new light dimmer switch faceplate cover that should have come with the\015\012dimmer and you are ready to test it.\015\012\015\012 \015\012\015\012Turn the\015\012power back on to your new light dimmer switch at the main circuit panel or fuse\015\012box.\015\012\015\012 \015\012\015\012Toggle\015\012the light dimmer switch and confirm the light turns on and off properly.\015\012\015\012 \015\012\015\012Adjust\015\012the dimmer knob or bar to confirm the light switch dims properly and you're\015\012done. you can equally visit the link below for additional information. http://www.homeadditionplus.com/electrical%20articles/how-to-install Thanks, you are highly appreciated.
