Eureka model 4870 belt replacement

\015 I can't figure out how to get the belt on the motor shaft. I took the bottom of the vac off and i'm looking at a belt that I can't even get off to replace. How do I manipulate belt over shaft?\015

Answers :

  • Following the belt replacement instructions in the manual, I removed the three screws, took off the base plate and removed the brush roll, slipping it out of the belt.
  • \015\012
  • Up and somewhat inside the plastic housing I could see the other end of belt going around the drive shaft.
  • \015\012
  • But the shaft had no gap around its end to allow removal or replacement of belts. It extended from the motor completely across the space and against the plastic housing.
  • \015\012
  • Yikes.
  • \015\012
  • I dismantled the housing until the end of the shaft was accessible and found that the problem wasn't the shaft moving out of position.
  • \015\012
  • The problem was that the bushing mounted on the end of the shaft for the belt to ride on had slipped over.
  • \015\012
  • Ah HAH.
  • \015\012
  • I applied some LokTite green threadlocking adhesive (though neither the shaft nor the bushing are threaded) to the shaft, slipped the bushing all the way onto it and put it all aside to set up.
  • \015\012
  • Finally I reassembled the machine with a new belt in place, plugged it in, crossed my fingers and hit the power switch.
  • \015\012
  • It worked like new! FIXT! And I had only one screw left over. It was a small one too, so I doubt if it was important...heh.
\015\012Does your machine have a slipped bushing? You may be able to fix it without taking it apart any more than for a normal belt replacement. Try using a rubber or plastic-tipped forceps or pliers move the bushing back into position. Be careful not to mar the metal as it will chew any new belt to bits in seconds. If you are able to move it, put on a few drops of LokTite, epoxy or some other adhesive to keep it in place. You may be able to avoid sending your vac to the shop for costly repairs.
There's nothing wrong with your motor. You are looking at the wrong spindle. One looks like a a half a spool of thread (chrome) and has no room around it for a belt. That's the wrong one. Look higher and you'll see another spindle a little wider than a pencil, probably marred with burned black rubber with about 1/2 inch of room for slipping the belt around it. It's hard to do, but you can make it easier using a screwdriver to poke it. Be careful not to cut the new belt with the screwdriver. Also be careful not to dislodge the little oddly shaped white felt thingies nearer the bigger spindle. They are the devil to get back in place. Be sure to remove all three screws from the cover when you begin so you can reposition the cover using the little "hooks" which go into slots. Otherwise the three holding screws will not be able to go all the way into their holes which makes the cover less secure. I had to figure this out through trial and error because the instructions on the vacuum cleaner were incomplete. Corporations don't hire engineers to help people fix their machines in the telephone. Often they are just quickly trained regular people with no experience. The assemblers did not make a mistake -- your motor did not slip out of place.

I'm using (or WAS using) a Eureka ''the boss'' model 8803. The belt broke, no biggie, so I replaced it with a Eureka model U belt, the problem is when I put the new belt on and turn on the vaccuum, the belt breaks again. I am also having trouble getting the brush roller to fit right when the belt is in place. I can't find any sharp edges that would cut the belt, nor can I find where any small bits may have broken. Anyone have a solution for me?

First, make sure you have the right belt, second, i am thinking that you are not lineing the roller up right, it will only fit one way. look at the ends of the roller and the grooves where it slides in, you should be able to see clearly how it goes. ... Vacuums

My 4870 K Boss is 2 years old. I have replaced belts & filters in the specified intervals. This last time I replaced the belt after a year, it shredded 3 of them on the outside edge of the belt in about 5 minutes of use. I ordered a new brush roller & heavy duty belt which I installed. It began shredding the belt in less than 5 minutes of use. What is your suggestion? Is this a known problem with this model? Eureka says no and is not standing behind it.

The only reason why it would be shredding the belt is if the pulleys were not lined up correctly. Check the allignement of the belt to make sure there is nothing kepping the pulleys from being in line. The other thing that it could be is if the rolle ... Vacuums
